How long is a diabetic diet consultation with a dietitian?

The first consultation with the dietitian will be 90 minutes long, thereafter follow-up visits are 30-60 minutes long.

Will my medical aid cover the cost of a diabetic diet consultation with a dietitian?

Most medical aids do cover the cost of a diabetic dietary consultation with a dietitian. It does however depend on your chosen plan and benefits.  Contact your medical aid prior to the consultation to determine if they will cover the cost.

What information do I need to bring to my consultation with the dietitian?

Bring you ID-document, medical aid details, and a list of your chronic medication.

Diet

Is the diabetic diet prescribed by the dietitian during the consultation very restrictive?

No, there are hundreds of products to choose from that are safe to use in a diabetic diet, making it easy to find food you enjoy.

Will the diabetic diet be very different from the food the rest of the family eats?

Not at all.  The diabetic diet that the dietitian prescribes requires small changes to ensure blood glucose control. These changes can be implemented by the whole family. 

How fast will I see improvements in my blood glucose control after starting the diet for diabetics?

When you follow the diet for diabetics prescribed by the dietitian during the consultation, you can expect improved blood glucose control in as little as three days.

Apart from improved blood glucose control, what other benefits does the diabetic diet provide?
